Style that travels well

April 2nd, 2010 · 1 Comment · tips

There’s a staple style for the traveling gal and it’s made of blue jeans and white trainers. Keeping stylish on the road is a challenge, true, but it’s far from impossible to do. Some styles are more travel-friendly than others, and it’s those pieces that you should always have ready when you’re en route.

Traveling Textiles
Choosing fabrics that travel well should be your first consideration when shopping for your trip. Different kinds of fabrics behave differently once you wear them through that five-hour train ride or trans-Atlantic flight.

Stock up on pieces that doesn’t easily crease or wrinkle. Knits, for one, can get scrunched up and folded in transit but look just as elegant when worn. They’re also great because you can find knits in a wide variety of styles, from a lightweight vest to thick and cozy jacket. You won’t run out of choices anytime soon. Soft, delicate fabrics like silks, on the other hand, should be avoided by the avid traveler.

Linen is another traditional textile that has found favor with the jet set. What’s not to like about it? Any linen piece – pants, in particular – will look fantastic even (or especially) when it’s wrinkled. The light, breathable fabric also works great for beach getaways and tropical vacations.

Modern technology also gives you several options. Fabrics blended with polyester or Lycra have the added benefit of drying quickly. Pants, tops and dresses made of these modern marvels can be given a quick wash in the evening, hung up to dry and then worn the next day.

Smart Packing for Stylish Travelers
When you travel, you have to take certain things into account as you pack your stuff. Will you need to bundle up for the cold or prepare the hot and humid? Do you plan on roughing it the whole way, or will there be nights out in metropolitan stopovers? Questions like these should influence what and how much to pack along.

A cooler climate calls for warmer clothing, but bringing furs and bubble jackets will be difficult because of the added bulk. You’ll be much better off with pieces that have different weights and textures –cable knits and wool blends, for example, make great layering pieces. This makes mixing and matching easier, even when you’re living out of a suitcase or day pack.

No girl should leave home without something at least semiformal to wear, especially if your destination has must-experience nightlife. You’ll want something simple like a little black dress that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. The more simple the piece, the easier it is to care for once you’re already on the road.

Remember to keep your clothes as varied as possible in terms of color, texture and style. You wouldn’t want end up looking like you wore the same clothes for weeks and weeks! After all, you do want to look both traveled and tasteful once those images get posted on Facebook.

Clothes that Make You Feel Sexy

January 29th, 2010 · No Comments · tips

Being sexy is as much about how you look as it is how you feel. Even if your body isn’t exactly the kind seen in Victoria’s Secret fashion shows, the right combination of clothes can make you feel sexy – and look the part to boot! Here are some of the pieces you may want to consider buying to get you started on the path to inner and outer beauty.

The LBD
A staple of the modern, fashion-conscious woman, the little black dress is an item that every girl should have, and with good reason. Whether you’re on your way out to party or on the way to a meeting, the LBD is perfect for the job. And when it comes to sheer sex appeal, the LBD is one number that’s tough to beat.

What’s not to like about little black dresses? They’re black, which has a slimming effect on any kind of body. Also, they’re typically cut close to the body, accentuating your curves. Finally, they pair well with just about any accessory from a Salvation Army purse to one-off designer shoes – good news for your wardrobe and your bank account.

If you don’t have one yet but plan to get one soon, there are a few things to keep in mind when buying your very first LBD. First, it’s a good idea to buy a quality brand, even if it’s pricey. Better quality control almost always means that the dress itself lasts longer. Second, if the dress doesn’t fit the first time, forget about it. There are others out there, and one’s bound to fit you the way it should.

One of the best things about little black dresses is that you don’t have to show a lot of skin to look and feel sexy. Even a sheath dress that displays a wee bit of leg above the knee and a hint of cleavage is enough to earn you bombshell treatment.

Cashmere Outerwear
Believe it or not, your sense of touch plays a big role in how you – and others – perceive your body. If you’re always in contact with surfaces that feel good against the skin, you’re likely to feel better about yourself in turn. Enter the wonderful world of feel-good cashmere.

It could be a little sweater to keep you warm inside the house, or a full-on luxurious coat with braiding and detailing that came straight out of Saks Fifth Avenue. Throwing a bit of cashmere into your outfit can go a long way towards making you feel better about how you look. The fabric’s smooth, comforting texture does much of that for you.

Find one that’s somewhat form-fitted – it should ideally hug you around the waist and the shoulders to show off your curves. Getting it in a length that suits the proportion of your body only enhances its flattering effect.

Killer Heels
Every girl has to have at least a pair of killer heels in her wardrobe to wear on days when you have to bring out every ounce of confidence in you. Aside from being a symbol of status, this style staple lengthens your legs and gives you more flattering proportions.

There are no hard and fast rules about what kind of heels to get. Even the height, which can vary from two and a half to four whole inches, is based largely on preference. In fact, the only qualification should be that it makes you feel good when you finally stand in front of the mirror wearing your outfit for the day. Now there’s sexy.
